Fatherless children are at risk. Source I Grew Up Without a Father The psychological effects of our childhood experiences can have an outsized impact on who we become later in life. Earlier today, I read an article that provoked what one might describe as a panic attack. As I read this very disturbing article about the psychological ramifications of growing up fatherless, it all just sunk in for me—that I was damaged.
Psychology is the science of behavior and mind, including conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feeling and is an academic discipline of immense scope and diverse interests that, when taken together, seek an understanding of the emergent properties of brains, and all the variety of epiphenomena they manifest. View Larger Image Narcissists are renowned for using psychological projection to blame other people, even when it is entirely apparent that they are the ones in the wrong. What is psychological projection? It was psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud that first coined the term projection, describing it as a way in which an individual projects their own undesirable thoughts and beliefs onto someone else.
Examples of psychological projection: Parents who have not achieved their goals in life demanding that their own children succeed. Fearing your partner will cheat on you is often a reflection of how you view yourself. Believing someone hates you could be signs of your hidden intense dislike for that person. With regards to the narcissist, they too can have deep and repressed feelings, this is because their view of the world is so cut off from real life.
It is often the case that a narcissist will blame their partner when their boundaries or rules are challenged. It is not that a typical narcissist fails to know the difference between right and wrong.

It had been over two years since Amy had experienced the death of her husband of 20 years, four since she had lost her mother—two sharp blows in her 50s. Her marriage had been troubled—her husband was abusive—but cancer took him before she could process what was happening.

Abstract Background In the field of video game violence experienced serious reversals with repudiations of the current research by the US Supreme Court and the Australian Government as non-compelling and fundamentally flawed. Scholars too have been calling for higher quality research on this issue. The current study seeks to answer this call by providing longitudinal data on youth aggression and dating violence as potential consequences of violent video game exposure using well-validated clinical outcome measures and controlling for other relevant predictors of youth aggression.
Method A sample of , mainly Hispanic youth, were tested at 3 intervals, an initial interview, and 1-year and 3-year intervals. Results Results indicated that exposure to video game violence was not related to any of the negative outcomes. Depression, antisocial personality traits, exposure to family violence and peer influences were the best predictors of aggression-related outcomes.
Interpretation The current study supports a growing body of evidence pointing away from video game violence use as a predictor of youth aggression.

This definition enjoyed widespread currency for decades. However, this meaning was contested, notably by radical behaviorists such as John B. Watson , who in his manifesto defined the discipline of psychology as the acquisition of information useful to the control of behavior. Also since James defined it, the term more strongly connotes techniques of scientific experimentation.

The Fascinating Psychology of Online Dating
Human match-making is a complicated process that likely dates back to the bible. However, the prevalence of online dating has arguably changed the landscape, as people are better able to curate what they share and how they present themselves online. Advertisement Every day, millions of single adults, worldwide, visit an online dating site. Many are lucky, finding life-long love or at least some exciting escapades. Others are not so lucky. The industry—eHarmony, Match, OkCupid, and a thousand other online dating sites—wants singles and the general public to believe that seeking a partner through their site is not just an alternative way to traditional venues for finding a partner, but a superior way.
With our colleagues Paul Eastwick, Benjamin Karney, and Harry Reis, we recently published a book-length article in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examines this question and evaluates online dating from a scientific perspective. We also conclude, however, that online dating is not better than conventional offline dating in most respects, and that it is worse is some respects. As the stigma of dating online has diminished over the past 15 years, increasing numbers of singles have met romantic partners online.
Indeed, in the U. Of course, many of the people in these relationships would have met somebody offline, but some would still be single and searching. Indeed, the people who are most likely to benefit from online dating are precisely those who would find it difficult to meet others through more conventional methods, such as at work, through a hobby, or through a friend. Singles browse profiles when considering whether to join a given site, when considering whom to contact on the site, when turning back to the site after a bad date, and so forth.
The answer is simple: A series of studies spearheaded by our co-author Paul Eastwick has shown that people lack insight regarding which characteristics in a potential partner will inspire or undermine their attraction to him or her see here , here , and here. The straightforward solution to this problem is for online dating sites to provide singles with the profiles of only a handful of potential partners rather than the hundreds or thousands of profiles that many sites provide.

How cult leaders like Charles Manson exploit a basic psychological need, professor explains
Put yourself on Tinder, and you might end up with a date—or a crippling case of negative thoughts about yourself. So suggests a new study about the psychological effects of the popular dating app, presented at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association. In the study, researchers asked a group of 1, mostly college kids to rate how they generally felt about themselves through questionnaires and self-reports.
Questions like How satisfied are you with your thighs? At the very end of the questionnaire, people were asked if they used Tinder.
The Psychological Bulletin is a monthly peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes evaluative and integrative research reviews and interpretations of issues in psychology, including both qualitative (narrative) and/or quantitative (meta-analytic) aspects. The editor-in-chief is Dolores Albarracin (University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
Participants were asked questions including: How much money would you be willing to spend on your date? Through five psychological experiments, Andrew Elliot, professor of psychology, and Daniela Niesta, post-doctoral researcher, demonstrate that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. And men are unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction.
The research provides the first empirical support for society’s enduring love affair with red. From the red ochre used in ancient rituals to today’s red-light districts and red hearts on Valentine’s Day, the rosy hue has been tied to carnal passions and romantic love across cultures and millennia.
The Mind Our busy modern lives make it hard to meet new people, so more and more of us are turning to technology to find that special someone. Once the last resort for lonely hearts, online dating has become socially acceptable, even widespread — 4. But popular as such sites may be, finding your ideal match online can take a lot of time, as traditional dating sites force users to read dozens or even hundreds of profiles.
So some sites are helping people narrow the field by using an algorithm — a set of logical instructions for solving a problem — to find love online. But can love really be found by crunching numbers in a computer?

They probably told you how different you were to anyone else they’ve dated, how you were “the one,” and you two were “meant to be. They spotted you, and they wanted to use you as their source of supply, and so turned on the charm using a technique called love bombing. It’s when someone makes you feel like you’re the most important person in the world, and they must be the one for you because they seem so perfect.
If you feel a relationship is progressing too fast, then it probably is, says Stosny. If someone has declared their undying love for you a few weeks after meeting them, and telling you you’re their soul-mate, and they’re making you uncomfortable, then the affection probably isn’t coming from a good place. It’s not unlike a predator searching for its prey, because they knew they had to find someone weak who they could easily exploit.
Having these qualities means you’re more likely to see the good in the narcissist, before they turn on you. Sometimes, the narcissist may even have known about you before they started speaking to you. They may have stalked you on social media or seen you around before they asked you out, because they were sussing out whether you’d be a good target. Instead, it is when they appeal to your sympathy.
